WBC make Haney ‘champion in recess’, crown Puello who must defend against Martin

Devin Haney has been granted the status of WBC champion in recess at 140 lbs after submitting a request to the sanctioning body, which was approved today. As Haney steps aside for the time being, Alberto Puello has been promoted to full champion and is now mandated to defend his title against top contender Sandor Martin.

Aside from his boxing career, Haney has been engaged in a social media feud with rival Ryan Garcia since their fight. Initially, Haney suffered a loss to Garcia, but the result was later changed to a no contest due to Garcia’s failed drug test.

Even before the fight result was overturned, Haney was allowed to retain his WBC 140 lb title because Garcia missed weight. This led to a mandatory defense against Sandor Martin, a match that garnered little enthusiasm from the boxing community.

Haney blames Garcia for diminishing his earning potential in a potential fight against Martin and is taking legal action to seek compensation. With the opportunity to face Martin offering low financial reward, Haney has opted to relinquish his obligation for now, keeping open the possibility to challenge for the belt in the future when it suits him.
